Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a spectacular, imaginative and heartwarming family musical presented by BrightLights Theatre School at Loughborough Town Hall in June 2023. Based on Ian Fleming's much-loved children's novel and the iconic 1968 musical film, the production brought a magical world of adventure, invention, comedy and unforgettable music to the stage. Featuring music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, the celebrated songwriting duo behind Mary Poppins, the musical combines memorable songs, colourful characters, energetic choreography and theatrical spectacle to create an entertaining experience for audiences of all ages. The story follows Caractacus Potts, an eccentric but lovable inventor and devoted single father who lives with his two children, Jeremy and Jemima, and their adventurous grandfather. Although Caractacus is full of extraordinary ideas and inventive creations, his unusual inventions rarely bring financial success, leaving the family struggling to make ends meet. When Jeremy and Jemima discover that a beloved former racing car is about to be sold for scrap, they desperately ask their father to save it. Determined to make his children's dreams come true, Caractacus sets about raising the money needed to purchase the vehicle. After several unsuccessful attempts to earn money from his inventions, Caractacus finally manages to buy the old car and begins transforming it into a magnificent motor vehicle. The result is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a remarkable car with a personality of its own and extraordinary abilities that go far beyond ordinary motoring. As the family sets off on a series of adventures, they are joined by Truly Scrumptious, a kind-hearted and spirited young woman who quickly develops a close relationship with Caractacus and his children. Together, they discover that Chitty is no ordinary car, possessing magical abilities that allow it to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles. However, their adventures soon attract the attention of the villainous Baron Bomburst, ruler of the fictional kingdom of Vulgaria, who becomes determined to acquire Chitty for himself. The Baron dispatches his incompetent spies, Boris and Goran, to steal the vehicle, setting in motion a series of comical misunderstandings and increasingly dangerous encounters. When Grandpa Potts is mistakenly kidnapped and taken to Vulgaria, Caractacus, Truly and the children embark on a daring rescue mission. Upon arriving in the strange kingdom, they discover that children have been outlawed by the Baroness, forcing families to hide their children from the terrifying Childcatcher.
