Bring It On

Bring It On: The Musical is an electrifying, high-energy musical comedy that combines the excitement of competitive cheerleading with a heartfelt story of friendship, ambition, rivalry, betrayal and self-discovery. Presented by ACT One Shepshed at the Iveshead Theatre in May 2024, this ambitious youth theatre production brought the Broadway musical to life through dynamic choreography, powerful vocal performances, energetic musical numbers and vibrant theatrical staging. Inspired by the popular 2000 film, the musical features an original story by Jeff Whitty, with music by Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda and lyrics by Amanda Green and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show blends contemporary musical theatre with pop, hip-hop and rap influences, creating a fast-paced and exciting production filled with humour, emotion and spectacular cheerleading sequences. The story follows Campbell Davis, a talented and ambitious high school student whose dreams appear to be coming true when she is appointed captain of the prestigious Truman High School cheerleading squad. With a supportive boyfriend, close friendships and the opportunity to lead her team to the National Cheerleading Championships, Campbell believes she is on the path to achieving everything she has worked towards. However, her seemingly perfect life takes an unexpected turn when she is suddenly transferred to Jackson High School, an inner-city school with a completely different social environment and, most importantly, no cheerleading squad. Forced to leave behind her friends, reputation and leadership position, Campbell struggles to adjust to her unfamiliar surroundings. Determined not to abandon her dreams, Campbell begins forming new friendships with students at Jackson High, including the confident and outspoken Danielle and members of the school's talented dance crew. As she learns to navigate her new environment, Campbell discovers that success is not simply about winning competitions or gaining recognition, but also about embracing individuality, building genuine relationships and finding confidence in herself. When Campbell uncovers the truth behind her unexpected transfer, she becomes determined to challenge her former school and assemble a new cheerleading squad capable of competing at the national championships. However, her pursuit of victory forces her to confront difficult questions about loyalty, revenge, friendship and what truly matters. As the competition approaches, rivalries intensify, relationships are tested and the characters begin to realise that their greatest achievements may not necessarily be measured by trophies or championship titles. Through teamwork, determination and personal growth, Campbell discovers the importance of accepting change, overcoming prejudice and recognising the value of the people around her. ACT One Shepshed's 2024 production brought this colourful story to the stage with an enthusiastic company of young performers, showcasing an impressive range of acting, singing and dancing abilities. The production featured exciting ensemble numbers, demanding choreography and a musical score performed by a live seven-piece band under the musical direction of Adrian Dobson. The choreography, led by Wendy Spencer and Helen Starkey, captured the athleticism, precision and excitement of competitive cheerleading while incorporating contemporary dance styles that reflected the contrasting personalities and cultures of Truman and Jackson High Schools. Large ensemble sequences and energetic movement created a visually engaging theatrical experience, demonstrating the dedication and versatility of the young cast. The production's technical elements played an important role in establishing the energetic atmosphere of the musical. Lighting design by James Cladingboel, operated by Olly Whitehead, complemented the fast-paced musical numbers, dramatic transitions and high-impact choreography. A combination of theatrical lighting effects, colour and dynamic visual changes helped enhance the excitement of the cheerleading competitions while supporting the more intimate and emotional moments of the story. Sound design by James White ensured that the musical performances, dialogue and live band were integrated throughout the production. Colourful costumes, detailed props and carefully coordinated stage management further contributed to the visual identity of the show, transforming the Iveshead Theatre into the competitive world of American high school cheerleading. The production received positive reviews, with particular praise for the enthusiasm and talent of its young performers, the quality of the choreography, the live musical accompaniment and the technical execution. Reviewers highlighted the show's professional presentation, energetic performances and the dedication of the creative and production teams. Theatre and Tonic +1 At its heart, Bring It On: The Musical is an uplifting story about resilience, friendship and discovering the confidence to embrace new opportunities. Beneath the excitement of cheerleading competitions and high-energy musical performances, the production explores the challenges of growing up, navigating relationships and learning that personal worth is defined by character rather than popularity or achievement. ACT One Shepshed's production successfully combined the excitement of a contemporary Broadway musical with the passion and commitment of youth theatre, delivering an entertaining theatrical experience that celebrated teamwork, creativity and the extraordinary potential of young performers. Performed at the Iveshead Theatre in Shepshed in May 2024, Bring It On: The Musical showcased the company's commitment to producing ambitious musical theatre while providing young performers with valuable experience in a professionally supported theatrical environment.
