90s Popstar Musical

Popstars! The 90's Musical was a vibrant, energetic and nostalgic musical comedy presented by ACT One Shepshed at the Iveshead Theatre in May 2023. Written by Neil Gooding and Nicholas Christo, the production transported audiences back to the colourful world of the 1990s, celebrating an era of unforgettable pop music, iconic fashion, boy bands, girl groups and teenage culture. Featuring a soundtrack packed with some of the decade's biggest hits, the musical combined comedy, romance, rivalry and friendship with lively choreography, colourful costumes and enthusiastic performances from ACT One's talented company of young performers. Set in an American high school during the 1990s, the story follows Mark, a popular student and aspiring musician who appears to have everything going for him. He has a close group of friends, a passion for music and a relationship with Shannon Van de Witt, the school's glamorous and ambitious queen bee. However, Mark's seemingly perfect life quickly falls apart when Shannon discovers that successful music industry impresario Simon Austin will be judging the upcoming State Talent Show. Determined to seize her opportunity for fame and fortune, Shannon abruptly ends her relationship with Mark, believing that her future lies in becoming a successful pop star. Devastated by the breakup and determined to prove himself, Mark joins forces with his garage band friends to hatch an ambitious plan. Rather than continuing with their usual grunge-inspired music, the boys decide to reinvent themselves as a polished 1990s boy band named Y2K, hoping to compete against Shannon and her rival girl group, the Candy Girls. Unfortunately, although the boys have musical talent and enthusiasm, they face one major obstacle: none of them can dance. Desperate to transform their group into serious contenders, Mark seeks help from Ella, a talented new student whose musical abilities, confidence and choreography skills could provide the key to their success. As Ella begins working with the boys, unexpected friendships develop, romantic feelings emerge and Mark gradually begins to question whether winning the competition and getting revenge on Shannon are really what he wants. Meanwhile, Shannon and the Candy Girls remain determined to dominate the competition, creating an increasingly entertaining rivalry between the two groups. With the State Talent Show approaching, the students must overcome their differences, develop their performance skills and discover what it truly means to work together. As rehearsals intensify and relationships become more complicated, the musical explores the challenges of growing up, navigating friendships, dealing with rejection and discovering personal identity. Through humour, music and heartfelt moments, the characters learn important lessons about loyalty, ambition, self-confidence and the importance of staying true to themselves. ACT One Shepshed's 2023 production brought this entertaining story to life with a talented ensemble of young performers, combining strong vocal performances, energetic choreography and colourful theatrical presentation. The production's technical elements played an important role in recreating the atmosphere of the decade. Lighting by James Cladingboel supported the show's energetic musical numbers and theatrical transitions, while sound by James White helped deliver the production's combination of dialogue, musical performances and ensemble sequences. The musical's contrasting environments, from high school classrooms and rehearsal spaces to the excitement of the State Talent Show, provided opportunities for dynamic staging and visual storytelling. Colourful lighting, period-inspired costumes and fast-paced scene transitions complemented the musical's upbeat soundtrack and nostalgic atmosphere. The production required close coordination between the performers, musical direction, choreography, stage management and technical departments to ensure that the numerous musical numbers and scene transitions were delivered smoothly throughout the performance.
